Planning Approved for £300m Albert Island Regeneration

The Albert Island regeneration scheme by Hamworth Tompkins has this week received planning consent from Newham council, for the 13 hectare redevelopment at the Eastern end of London's Royal Docks.

The London & Regional Properties scheme at the end of the runway at London City Airport will provide major distribution warehouse storage facilities, light industrial buildings, employment space, an education facility, double height warehousing, boatyard, pier and townhouses.

The employment space, known as The Ideas Factory, will be designed for a mix of start-up businesses plus for educational use. Allowing a large number of small firms to be housed together, the innovative multilevel structure will be unique in the UK.

The ambition behind the scheme was to create a sustainable employment hub, that would combine industrial infrastructure with great landscaping with the adjacent cycle and walkway links and enhanced river and lockside frontage.

The technical design of the first buildings is now underway with a start on site anticipated during 2022.
